Keyword Harvesting
When using auto campaigns Amazon doesn’t require you to give them a list of keywords to target, Amazon will instead use their own algorithm to recognize keywords from competitors’ products and use them as a target for your sponsored ads. You can then go and look at your search term report and figure out which keywords to use. It’s called keyword harvesting.
Your sponsored ad will show up on more pages on Amazon
Another reason why Auto Campaigns are important is that they show up on certain weird placements on Amazon’s website that only Auto Campaigns get those placements.
One good example of where Amazon will show your sponsored ads when using auto campaign is on the Amazon deals page (when you’re having a lightning deal).
Another example is that people here at our Amazon PPC agency have noticed, sponsored ads are showing on Frequently-Bought-Together on Amazon product pages, and that is probably also triggered by Auto campaigns.
You’ll often see interesting search terms in Auto campaigns, which I believe are not search terms but certain placements.
So even if you think that you don’t need keyword harvesting, Auto Campaigns still serve a great purpose.
